Why do I have Prolonged Diarrhea?

I went on a vacation to Spain, Morocco, and Portugal. At my last stop in Portugal I had horrible stomach problems. I would eat and within 20 minutes I would HAVE to go to the bathroom. I took a pill the last day and that stopped things. I have been home for two weeks now and I have been having diarrhea pretty often. One day was particularly bad where 5 minutes after I ate I would have to use the bathroom, I could feel my intestines moving. I also have had a very slight weight loss, like about 3lbs.Could this be anything? I have overall good health, I am thin and somewhat active. I am a 19 year old female. I have a childhood history of autoimmune anemia.

Hi there Adrienne,I realize that you are currently worried about your wellbeing. Nevertheless, you need to understand that with your description of the symptoms, it can be extremely hard for anybody to attempt a diagnosis even if they were an MD. I am sure you already know what your physician would certainly say, if you called him up, repeated everything you stated right here and requested a diagnosis on the phone. He'd acknowledge he cannot come up with a diagnosis without first examining you up, perhaps have some blood examination completed, listen to your chest, screen your heartbeat etc.Leaving your health in the care of untrained and unknown people is the most awful possible idea you could have. Virtually any answer you may receive will be in the form "oh sure...I had developed the identical symptoms and it was this, this or that..." The symptoms you describe and your travels highly suggest a viral infection. Normally nothing serious. Bear in mind however that the very same symptoms don't invariably imply the exact same cause for everyone. Even though you could get a answer from some user professing to be an MD you would probably have no guarantee that they are really an MD, rather than some 13 yr old who may be up for a joke. Do not ever put your health into the hands of complete strangers. You do not know who may be answering your concern. Instead, stop by a medical expert at the earliest opportunity and ask him to check you up. It might be almost certainly nothing to concern yourself with however it certainly is better to make sure. Our wellbeing is the most important possession that each of us has. No money in the bank, jewels, cars or houses are as precious as it is. Take care of it the best you can. Best wishes!

Why do I keep getting cramps when I run?

I cramp up after a mile on a 3 mile run. I am more than capable to run this without getting cramps. I can't think of any reason I get cramps now.

Side stitches normally mean you either aren't hydrated or you have a lack of sodium. I would start with drinking lots of water before I up my sodium intake. We get enough sodium in processed foods, but if you run 50+ miles a week, you could be sweating it out faster than you consume it.If you are getting muscle cramps, stretching might help, or it could be a lack of potassium in your diet. Bananas are high in potassium.

Other Answers:

  • A thing you should take into consideration is how much water you drink before the runs and after, you should also drink water at least 30 mins before running that way the water has to settle in. Secondly stretch ! And that should be pretty much it , so drink more water
  • Do you eat before you run? Could be the reason. I figured out that if I don't eat before running I'm faster and I don't get cramps. If you start getting side stitches or cramps, what I do is I start walking and put my hands on top of my head. It seems to work for me.Could be the way you're breathing, also. If you breathe too quickly, very little oxygen gets into your lungs. You have to have a complete breath, so pay attention to the way you're breathing.
  • You may not be drinking enough liquid, or the wrong liquid. Gatorade gives me cramps if I drink it before/during a run. You may be eating to close to a run. Try allowing yourself about 1 1/2 hours between a run and eating. Or your clothes may be to tight. If you're a girl, (sorry, didn't look at your username before answering), your sportsbra may be too tight.
  • Try raising your hands over your head and breathing deeply while running when this occurs. Are you getting nutrition in after your runs? You might still be drained from your previous run. I'd also suggest starting your runs VERY slow and gradually speeding up until this goes away.
  • You should make sure you aren't drinking or eating too much before you run! This should be really helpful and just make sure you're fighting through the pain!!! good luck!
