How to develop a workout routine at the gym?

So I got a gym membership last month and it occurs to me that I'm basically using it to either walk or bicycle for an hour five nights a week. Both of which I could for free from the privacy of any public road. The thing is that I basically don't know what else to do with myself. I'm an overweight man who's goal is to lose weight, but obviously toning my body is important. The gym doesn't have trainers. I have seen people offer services on Craigslist, but obviously I don't know how I'd determine that they know what they're doing.
