How to develop a workout routine at the gym?

So I got a gym membership last month and it occurs to me that I'm basically using it to either walk or bicycle for an hour five nights a week. Both of which I could for free from the privacy of any public road. The thing is that I basically don't know what else to do with myself. I'm an overweight man who's goal is to lose weight, but obviously toning my body is important.The gym doesn't have trainers. I have seen people offer services on Craigslist, but obviously I don't know how I'd determine that they know what they're doing.
