Possible to lose a LOT of weight on protein?

I'm male, 20, and have a lot of weight to lose, roughly 150 pounds. I'm not having much luck on traditional weight loss. I'm trying to exercise a lot. I lift some everyday and only have access to a treadmill twice a week. I'm also really short on money for the foreseeable future. I'm just curious how effective weight loss is with diets that have a lot of protein in them. Chicken breast/thighs, ground meat, lots of fish/canned-tuna, etc. Any advice for someone that needs to cut their body weight in half? I want to gain a fair bit of muscle as I like lifting weights but I don't know if I should wait until I lose weight.
