- You'd probably lose about 1 pound a month. If you could cut 300 calories a day, you could lose another 3 pounds a month. four pounds a month is really a good goal - its a healthy rate for weight loss that is not only sustainable over the long term but unlikely to come back. and just think that's about 40 pounds a year. Cool!
- This is not your best option to be honest. The weight loss will only really begin after 30 mins of exercise, and presuming your 45 includes cool-down, then you are not going to lose very much.Complicating matters, good personal trainers do not use cardio as the primary weight loss measure (until well into a long-term training program, like a 1 year thing) because it causes a sharp rise in hunger levels, which makes most people eat as much if not more than the calories they burned.Your best bet is to do some cardio (say 30 mins) and also do some weight training (i.e. bench press, bentover rows... etc) and some "body weight training" (i.e. lunges, burpees, pushups). Try to focus on compound exercises (those that affect many different muscles in one motion) like squats. You can do some bicep curls and tricep extensions and other isolation exercises if you want, but they are not going to cause much development from a weight loss perspective. The point of the weight training is to build muscle so that your metabolism begins to rise. That way you can lose weight through the energy expended on the exercises AND keep the weight off after by virtue of a more active metabolism AND get additive gains such that with each passing month you will be tacking more reps (or more weight) which expends more energy while simultaneously you lose weight just by virtue of an ever increasing metabolism. As a final point- and this one is critical- success comes to those that can see into the long term. It is said that the average CEO of a major corporation can plan 20 years into the future, whereas the average person can only plan 1 year into the future; this is a major reason why CEOs are so successful. Highschool age people are notorious for only being able to see 1 maybe 2 days into the future. Break the mold and forget about 1-month fitness objectives. The only fitness objective for the month should be to perform exercise 3 or 4 days per week (2 minimum, 5 maximum) every week, every month. Even when you are tired, or have a bad day or "dont feel like it", just go do your exercises and do the best you can. Set a 12 month objective for yourself that is reasonable (in your case, I would aim for 190lbs body weight 12 months from now AND to be able to do (either) more reps or heavier weight each month in comparison to the month prior. Set a reasonable weight/rep combo for one month and ever first of the month increase. Be sure to do a 10 minute warm up and a 20 minute cool-down on your elliptical, with your weight and bodyweight training in the middle of these warmups and cooldowns.IMPORTANT: cut back a little bit (not much) on the amount of food you consume, and make sure that you never increase your food consumption in comparison to what you do now. Try to eat more protein sources (chicken breast for example) than carbs: (so for example if you presently eat 20% protein, 20% fat, 60% carbs, change this to: 40% protein, 20% fat, 40% carbs). The combination of more (% wise) protein and less total food will be crucial to weight loss. Don't eat just because you are hungry. Eat only a specified amount, and make sure the amount is less than you consume now, but only a bit less: "dieting" (as most people think of the word) as the primary mode of weight loss is stupid. The point is to burn off more energy than you consume by eating a reasonable amount of healthy food while increasing exercise.
