Would taking metformin xr in the morning rather than at night help weight loss?

I started taking 1000 mg at night about a week and a half ago for my pcos but the scale has not budged. In fact I think I gained a pound or so!

How to Lose Weight From Face

Recommended Answer:

Metformin is prescribed for diabetes. Of late docs have starting trying this med for obesity. But there is yet not enough evidence of its efficacy for weight loss. Sometime it can be harmful also if taken in higher doses. Better you try other traditional methods for weight management.

Other Answers:

  • According to the patient package insert for metformin HCl ER tablets, in a 24 week study of 138 people, metformin caused a 0.5% weight GAIN in those taking 1000 mg daily, and a 0.46% weight LOSS in people taking 1500 mg daily. Because there was a relatively few people in the study, I would not draw hard conclusions, but it appears to not have much of an effect. Other studies have shown slight weight losses (1-2 pound LOSS over 16 weeks). At any rate, I would not expect large fluctuation in weight from the medication alone. Increased activity and reduced caloric intake are the only things that will result in sustained reductions in body weight.
